FAST Professional Education Project Delivered to Over 1000 Healthcare Workers 06 June 2025 Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland’s Professional Engagement team has delivered FAST stroke awareness education to over 1000 healthcare professionals and people working in patient-facing roles as part of a Scottish Government funded project. The education course focuses on recognising the key signs of stroke using the FAST acronym, which stands for Face Arm Speech Time. It describes three of the common signs of stroke and highlights the importance of acting quickly to call emergency services. It is a recognised approach by the National Clinical Guideline for Stroke. Our professional engagement team initially delivered the course to over 1000 attendees working in patient-facing roles in GP Practices, Emergency Departments, and the Scottish Ambulance Service. Surveys carried out with attendees before and after completing the course showed that accurate recall of the FAST acronym had improved, with over 85% respondents reporting that their knowledge of FAST had improved post-session. One participant said: “This has helped me understand how useful this simple test is to save lives in the community.” The programme is now being expanded to include additional primary care groups such as community pharmacies and optometrists, to ensure better awareness of the key signs of stroke in health settings across Scotland.
